What is Spam? Also known as junk email or unsolicited bulk email, spam is email that is unsolicited and sent in bulk.
Isn't Spam illegal? In New Zealand we have the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007, which says "A person must not send, or cause to be sent, an unsolicited commercial electronic message that has a New Zealand link".
Can anyone use SpamBlocker?SpamBlocker blocks spam at domain level before it gets to your mail server. To use the SpamBlocker service you need a registered domain name.
What makes SpamBlocker different?Unlike most anti-spam solutions SpamBlocker does not analyse the content of the message as this process has a tendency to produce a large number of 'false positives' or the blocking of legitimate mail instead of just the SPAM.
SpamBlocker uses information from the inbound connection to determine if the server is a trustworthy source.SpamBlocker forces any new server connection which we have not seen before to pass a server to server challenge response process that is transparent to both the sender and recipient, but that most spam mail engines simply will not pass.
What about 'dangerous' emails? We check messages using traditional SPAM techniques to flag potentially dangerous messages to the end users. These checks include attachments which contain executable code, and URLs in the message which point to known blacklisted web sites and others. We also virus scan all emails using the Symantec Virus scanning engine.
Do I need to install anything on my computer?SpamBlocker works at domain level blocking any spam emails before they reach your computer, so does not require any software to be installed. We simply redirect your domain through our system which gets rid of any spam, then forward the valid emails to your existing mail server.
What if the SpamBlocker system goes down or your Internet service provider goes down?SpamBlocker has multiple data centres located in the North Island, both of which are serviced by separate Internet Service providers. Our systems are completely mirrored in both centres so that should one service provider or centre go down your mail will simply be delivered via the other.
Is there a limit on users or domains? With SpamBlocker there are no limits on the number of users or domains that you have.
Our plans are simply based on the volume of legitimate mail that you receive. So you can have all of your domains under the one SpamBlocker plan.
What about security?SpamBlocker staff have Top Secret Security Clearance certified by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service. As soon as email is delivered to your server it is permanently deleted from the SpamBlocker system.
Can I do recipient filtering with SpamBlocker?SpamBlocker can perform a real-time lookup of the recipient address with your mail server during the initial SMTP Session. If your mail server accepts the recipient address we drop the connection to your server and continue processing the message as normal. If you server gives us an invalid recipient address status we pass that status straight back to the sending host with which we still have a connection and drop the connection to that host.
What about locking down my firewall? We suggest you update your firewall to only allow inbound email from the SpamBlocker servers as some Spammers will still attempt to send mail directly to your servers even though the mail exchange records have been configured to deliver mail via SpamBlocker.
What about any spam messages that I get?Never respond to spam, even something as simple as "Don't spam me" will show that your email address is valid. You can forward the spam to us using the method below, and then delete it.
Any spam messages can be forwarded to SpamBlocker using the following procedure:
(1) Create a new message and address it to email@example.com
(2) Drag and drop the spam email into the newly created message, it will now appear as an attachment.
How did the spammer find my email address?Spammers collect email addresses from websites, chatrooms, customer lists, newsgroups, and viruses which harvest user address books, and are sold to other spammers.
